Default water port groove 4.7

has anyone ever heard about a groove between the front two water ports, on the block of a 4.7. My father in law blew a head gasket and the mechanic said that the engine was ruined because there was a 1/4 groove that extended from one water port to another. He said that it was useless to replace the head gasket because it would not seal off the ports and would just blow the gasket again. I sounded odd to me that it would happen on an 02" Ram 1500 with about 100,000 miles. Also, if the groove does keep it from sealing off, can the groove be fixed instead of having to go and buy another block? Has anyone ever heard of something like that? It does not seem like the block would suffer a damage like that. It has no cracks and according to the mechanic, that is the only thing wrong with the engine. My father in law even purchased new heads, although his were not cracked because the mechanic though that it would be best.

I seen that Hammer posted up just last week that the 4.7L's were known for their cooling chambers being way too close to the cylinder walls and that the cooling would eat through the walls or cause the thinniest part to collapse, but i don't know if that has much to do with what you've got.

Sounds to me that Chrysler made something that is just not worthy enough for everyday use.
