Default Question about factory wheels.

I have a 2004 Ram 1500...It came factory with 17 inch wheels, the chrome plated ones. The chrome is starting look very dull and is turning black from brake dust. I know that these wheels are plated. My question is: Is there a way to take the chrome plating off to reveal the black steel wheel underneath? I think it would look neat if i could get it off and just run the chrome center caps. Almost like a cop car wheel. Has anyone tried this and done is successfully?

I think that all wheels after 2000 for most manufacturers went to Plastic covered chrome overlays. I don't think you have chrome painted directly on the wheel.

It can be done, I have seen a few guys who did it and painted them black. It looks pretty good if done right.

Does anybody on here have their chrome covers off because I was wondering what it looked like?

Wow!! I didn't know the 17" had plastic covers as well. I thought that only most of the 20's did. A friend of mine had a set of factory 20's that were not plastic but were always dull.
