Default 04 4.7 ltr #4 cyl misfire

Hello guys,

I'm new here, great forum from what I've checked out so far. Great info!

Was over on the Durange forum but kinda slow there. Since some Ram's have the same engine though I'd throw this at you guys too.

My issue: 2004 Durango 4.7 ltr with 51k mi. Recently started to show a misfire. Code scan showed "Cyl #4 misfire". Replaced plugs, coil pack and injector. No change.

#4 plug was pretty black, not wet. All other plugs were golden brown but definatly at the end of their life (all new now).

There is a ticking noise comeing from the engine (sounds like near #4 cyl). Theroy from X99J is possible rocker arm popped off, that is my plan once compression check is done, pull valve cover and check rockers.

What do you guys think? Any other info you need or suggestions would be great.

Thanks guys,,, RIX

well i thought for sure their would be more responses over here but here is a similiar story in a liberty 3.7L. the 3.7L is a 4.7L with two cylinders chopped off, same valve train. in the link the conclusion of the problem is on the 2nd page (fyi)

That sounds about like the best plan of attack. Check the compression and then a visual check is about the best I would think of...

Awesome guys... Thank you so much. I will do these checks tonight.

Any word on if I need to replace the valve cover gasket due to removeal of the VC? Or is that gasket reusable?

the gasket is rubber and you shouldn't have to replace it but if you don't but one it will probably mess up and if you do buy one it will come off clean so...it should be fine. don't forget to reset your pcm...if say it was your injector and the computer hasn't noticed a new one it may still be trying to force the new one to add the same amount of fuel or restrict the same amount of fuel...disconnecting the battery doesn't always reset the pcm. take the fuse out for the pcm and then put your key in and try to start it. you will hear a ding as if your door is open or lights are on. put the fuse in and see if she likes you>>
