Which to buy - 2500 or 1500?

i dont know about for not for much cash. the diesel option is like $6k. besides what would he need the diesel for. its not like hes gonna tow 16000 lb anytime soon

2009 2500's are supposedly IFS models now... with dodge it appears that you are stranded unless you go with the 3500 model. The 2500 PW might have a SFA, but I am not 100% sure. All I can say is an epic upset going to an IFS in the 2500.

Hrm. I don't remember the exact numbers, but my trade from 1500 SLT to 2500 SLT was essentially a wash, and I got LSD, fogs, power rear window, and power adjustable pedals as a bonus.

If you go with the 2500 get the diesel.

I stoped in at the local stealer ship and they have 09 2500's and they'er all SFA. I even asked the sales dept about that and they said only in 2wd models their will be IFA.

I won't claim to be an expert here, but this is my $0.02!

I am thinking that you are going from a SFA 1500 to and IFS - if you go to the 1500 vs the 2500.

Something that hasn't been mentioned, but should be addressed if you are looking at the Hemi engine in your new truck. From the '06 1500 models on, the engine has the MDS, (Multi-Displacement System), that allows you to run on 4 cylinders rather than 8. The 2500's AND the Mega-Cab 1500 Hemi's do NOT have this system.

There are a lot of people who do not like the MDS system. I have an '06 1500 RCLB 4x4. I think that I would like to not have the MDS. However, while I am getting about 11 to 13 mpg around town, i just talked to an '08 owner with the megacab 1500 that is only getting 9 mpg on a good day. So there could be advantages either way.

All realistic indications point to no real issues with the MDS so far as working the truck or towing with it; but is does seem to become a very personal issue. I would say; check this aspect out if you are leaning towards a 1500.

Regarding your other issues; tire size. This has already been stated, but just as an FYI, when I bought my '06, about 18 months ago, it had 35X12.50/18 Hankook RT03's on 18x8.5 Ultra wheels. It does have a levelling kit, ut I never had any problems with bump or wheel rub. When I replaced the tires I went to 33X12.50/18 Toyo M/T's; definitely no issues with these - well aside from the MPG's they eat up!

how much better mph did you get with the smaller tires?

Anothermrule of thumb 2500s are suppoably built better, bigger breaks, stronger axles', stronger trans, frame, susspention. MPG's are a little lower but its a truck.

I have the 2500. I get 12 around town and 13-14 freeway. I bought it because I haul a 2,500 pound camper and pull a 3,500 pound boat. I also got the hemi over the CTD because it would take me 10 years to make up the difference in cost and it also had the lifetime warranty and could haul more weight. This baby is a work truck, bar none. I can go through the passes going 70 MPH with the camper and pulling the boat and still have plenty of power. If you need a truck to haul and pull often, get the 2500. I sometimes think I should have gotten the 3500...
