Default Headlights

OK, call me stupid. Or maybe a typical individual. I can't read that whole owners manual - it's Huge as far as I'm concerned. But when I find something out or want to know about something - I'll refer to it. Now, I owned a 1998 Dodge Dakota, which had a little "problem" with the headlight **** (used to come right off in my hand once in a while), Moving on to My new truck, once in a while I'd get out and forget to turn the headlights off (hearing the little chime - I'd reach back and turn them off) then walk away. Well a couple times I did that, and they stayed on. Sorta made me mad, I'd flip them back on and off again - which usually made them go off. Once though I didn't bother doing it, I wasn't going to be out of the truck too long. Came back to the truck and they were off already. This puzzled me.... I've heard of "Timed off lights" or courtesy, assistance and all those other names before, but I didn't see anything on the window sticker about it. Well sure enough, I intentionally left them on and watched, they went off. So I guess this truck is still "Giving" me that new feeling, especially when I find out little extras I have but never knew about.

If you don't know you've got them, stick the key in and start the truck, turn lights on - leave lights on and turn truck off remove keys, now turn lights off. Do they stay on? If so, you've got that thing on page 101 of the owners manual that says "Headlamp deley - If equipped".

Just thought I'd share some of my "ignorance".

I always do that (leave them on that is). I do it for more of a safety reason (and to see how many people say "Hey, you left your lights on" or "Do you lights turn off automatically?").

I remember when I first got mine I thought the same thing. If you turn the *** before you get out they shut off. But if you turn the *** after you cut the engine they do seem to stay on forever huh?

Ive notice with mine that if you turn off the light before turning off the truck they go off and if you turn off the truck first the stay on for a few minutes. If you want to turn them off fast just turn you key back to the run position and they should shut off if the lighs are still off. Ive never attempted to leave my lights on and walk away but now i have something new to try.

If you turn off the lights prior to killing the engine lights stay off. If you turn off the engine then the headlights they remain on the timer. However, if you turn off the engine and forgot to kill the lights turn the **** off then on then off again lights will go out instantly.

if you accidentally leave your lights on, is there like a 5 minute delay before the computer shuts them down so it doesn't drain your battery?

When we first got it, that option stumped us too...it's strange, i guess for parking garages?
