you all are not getting my point.
point is if i open a thread on programers i want to read things that pertain to programers i dont want to read about what you all ate for supper last night i want to read about the topic at hand. if you want to talk with your buddies about non thread related things go to the chat section

Yeah, I gotta admit, it starts to get a little old at times. I am sure I get a little short with a person who asks the same question that was asked the day before and three days before that and two days before that, etc., etc., etc.
It would be nice if more people would do a search, but at the same time, those of us on here nearly everyday have to realize that someone only on here occasionally or for the first time, may not realize the question was just posed recently...

well here's the thing.....me and hammer worked on putting together the FAQ with hopes that new people coming into the section or even people that have been here would use it as a first resource and go there to ask their questions...It seems to have worked somewhat, but not quite like we wanted (i don't think)....it's at the point where most people don't bother to search for their answer, they make a new post and then expect people to answer...

what needs to happen is people need to go to the FAQ first and foremost upon coming into the section...go there, read up on what everyone is doin for different thing on their truck and ask questions there, not in here...we did it that way with hopes of keeping this part of the section more "technical" instead of having the same things over and over......maybe there's a way we can get something going when new people join that they are required to post in the FAQ before they can post in here, but probably not

trust me, your not the only one that this is bothering....i guess we just need to go with it untill people realize we have a section for the common questions and once it gets goin some more, there will be more topics added.

So Hammer and hemiyellow, are you able to change the search function to allow 3 letter searches? I've run into that problem several times trying to search for things (such as my "MDS" example). Nobody really types "Multi-Displacement System" in the threads, they use "MDS." So if I am searching for information on it, I really can't find it through a search. Same thing for "oil." While there may be some info in the FAQ (and thanks for making that), not everything is there, and can't possibly be there.

+1 to that all the way
but what i feel that will happen to the guys that have been loving the tecnical side of this they will not be around because they are sick of this section turmimg into a party instead of comming on and getting answers.
i no i dont come on much anymore because its over ran with things like hammer stated .
and i think new people shouild have to join the faq sec before comming over hear not as a punishment but more to learn how this section operates.

what you could do is move all the threads to a subfolder so when a new member comes in all they see is FAQs and THREADS. clicking on THREADS or whatever you want to call it brings up all the threads like we see now. as is the FAQs section isnt quite as eye catching as it is just to scroll down and see all the threads. might help a bit

SOS, we can't change the search feature...only a site admin can.....i know not everything is there, but if theres a basic question that can be asked about that topic then do it in that thread in the FAQ not out here. If there happens to be a more detailed/technical question, then ask away in this section. thats why the FAQ was made is to move those basic questions that are asked every other day in a section where 99% of a persons answers can be found

ramhunter, i'm with ya there all the way...it does get annoying because people use this section for things that can be discussed in the FAQ...but me and hammer need to talk to someone and see about changing it somehow....i don't think it's gonna be possible to make it manditory for people to join the FAQ before they can come to this section, just don't think it's gonna work...it would be nice to make it so thy can only post in that section for the first month or whatever and then have the ability to post in this section so maybe they will learn that this is for more technical stuff

silverbullet, i like the idea about a pop-up window

matthewbeard, while i like the idea i think it would be too much of a hassle to change it to that and then still going to have the same problems as we do now...when the 3rd gen section comes up, theres 2 sub-sections at the top of the page that are clearly visible that people just pass over
