Default Brake Wear on Manual trans

i have an 06 4.7 6 Speed, approaching 35,000 and not a word about my brakes from my mechanic (who is very good at letting you know you're going to need something far in advance, very trust worthy guy, he does all my family's vehicles)

im curious how many miles you guys are getting before a brake job, especially on the Manual side of things!

You will notice you dont replace brakes nearly as often as us with an automatic trans. If you drive a standard right you downshift to slow yourself down for the most part opposed to us with an auto having to apply the brakes the whole distance

Don't downshift too much though. Downshifting burns more fuel and can wear out the clutch faster. I've cut back on my downshifting. I can't give you any guess on the miles you will get out of the brakes because my '06 six speed still has less than 10k on it. But, ask yourself this: would you rather replace the clutch or replace brake pads?

What he said. I've driven a fair number of "sticks" in my day. Lotsa miles, and the only clutch work was a slave cylinder on a Toyota P/U with over 70K.

Don't know if I agree about the increased fuel consumption. When I downshift, my foot's off the gas (throttle's closed) after I've matched the revs. Rev-matching should reduce clutch wear to insignificant levels.

I have 96K on my original brakes, no warped rotors, no problems whatsoever.

I will be replacing them this summer with ceramic whether they need it or not, by then I'll be beyond 100k

I do like my 6 spd, and haven't regretted getting it at all, not even in traffic.
