Hey guys 1 more question. I have a 02 4.7 quad cab 1500 and i just noticed that when i stop my truck and keep it at idle for a few minutes the temp gauge goes from about half on the gauge down to about 1/4. Is this normal for the temp to go down that much?

 

I would say not. Once mine gets to operating temp it stays there.

 

does anyone know what would cause that? maybe i need a new thermostat?

 

Could be as simple as that, and considering they are fairly cheap, it's not a bad place to start.

 

Probably a dumb question but where is the thermostat located and how do i change it.

 

Follow your top radiator hose from the radiator, it'll take you right to it.Take the hose loose from the thermo housing(be ready to catch some anti-freeze that you may loose) bend the hose back out of the way and then 2 bolts to take the thermo housing off. take the old one out, (thermostat that is) put the new one in and put everything back in reverse from the way you took it off. Thats it!

 

Not a dumb question. I am not sure, but I believe you just follow the lower radiator hose to where it connects to the engine block... It's under that connection. Might have to remove a hose clamp or a couple of bolts to get at it.

 

Ok, so maybe it's the top hose. Either way it shouldn't be hard to find.

 

thanks guys, im gonna try replacing it this week and hopefully it fixes the problem. I also started noticing that my gas mileage went down from 13mpg to about 10 or 11mpg and someone said that a bad thermostat can cause that is this true?

I have an 03 4.7. You'll have to get to it from under the passanger side of the truck. follow the large lower rad hose. Remove the hose from thermo housing. You'll get rad fluid from both sides. Remove the 2 bolts holding the thermo houseing on. Check position of bypass hole before pulling thermostat. So you now which way it is supposed to face. The bypass hole should be facing towards the top. Assemble in reverse order, put in some new rad fluid and bleed out the air.
