Default Tires? what to buy and what looks best?

After owning my truck a little over a year now Id like to change my tires...I had a dealer quote me somthing insane as far as price goes..Here's the thing..I have never been a tire guy nor do I want to be..This is why im here. I want to have a good set of tires that belong off road.I dont want the over rated car tires that come stock on thses new trucks.I would also like to fill the huge void in the rear of the truck left by too small of a tire.I have the 17 inch wheels....Any ideas and what kind of pricing am i looking at? The dealer quoted me $450.0 plus install per wheel....I think not my god..Thanks Guys!!

you could check the FAQ, but for a proper opinion we need to know, is the truck a daily driver? What size wheels do you have? How much time do you intend to spend off road? Is road noise an issue? Do you want them to last a long time (50k +) or be more aggressive?
If you have the factory 20's, you may want to opt for 17" wheels. Much better for off-road use and the tires will cost considerably less than tires for 20" wheels.

17's or 20's?

Screw dealership tires & prices either way... Give us an idea of what size you need & we can come up with something for you, but $450 a tire is absurd.

Good im glad im not the only one that thinks that..I guess you didnt catch my edit...I have 17 inch wheels. Im not to worried about road noise and it is a daily driver. So I guess a good 50/50 split would be nice..meaning on and off road.I was out icefishing and some guy had a real nice set on his ram..I wish i would have asked him what they were..He had on fender flares and the tread wraped right around the tire and had the tread on the sidewall.. Does that help you guys at all?

Tread on the sidewall would be indicative of a Mud Terrain tire. A great tire for off-road use, but will not handle all that well on pavement, usually a M/T tire is marginal at best on wet roads. Then there are All Terrain Tires. A/T's usually wear well on pavement, handle well on slick, wet roads. Downside is they'll get you stuck in places a M/T tire will claw you right through.
Until recently, I was in the same boat as you. I needed a tire with good handling and that I would not wear out in no time on my 360 mile commutes from where I was/am living in Fla. to my farm in Ga. But then I needed to handle the slop of the red Ga. clay while working the farm, hunting (especially hog hunting the swamps) and fishing.
I chose the Dick Cepek Fun Country II's for this reason. I don't think there is a better tire for a daily driver that is needed to play rough on the weekends.
It's got long wearing A/T style treads in the center for great wear and long wear on pavement, but the outer treads and "side biters" are that of a M/T tire to get you through the muck off road. Price for a 33" tire, about the max for an unlifted truck would be about $200-225 per tire. On the higher end of the scale, but IMO worth every penny. I've got 19k miles on mine and still have 95% of the tread. I fully expect to get 60k+ out of these tires.
There is a write up in the Off Road Guide in the Off Road Section, page 3, post #23:
