Question Anybody use a 5w 40 motor oil in their vehicle?

My truck has 68k and am noticing that its starting to burn oil. My manual says 5w-30 but I am looking to upgrade so that it stops burning. Has anybody used a 5w or 0w-40 motor oil? I am thinking either shell rotella T synthetic or mobil 1 0w-40 european car formula.

Nope, I use 5w20.... I'm not so sure going to 5w or 10w 40 is going to stop it from burning the oil

Heavier oil may slow a leak, but burning it is different. You might try a can of Restore. It's supposed to fill in scored cylinder walls. I don't know if it really works or not. Doubt if it would hurt.

I'd be much more inclined to stay with the recommended oil viscosity, which in the case of your '04, is 5w/30. At the next oil change, substitute a Qt. of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer for a quart of your oil. It is a 100% pure petroleum stabilizer and as such, can be mixed with either conventional or synthetic oils...

Lucas makes great products, used to use the oil stabilizer in my old 5.9. in general it seemed to like it better.
