I still have stock 17s on my truck. I love 'em and im broke, so new rims are out of the question. My real question tho, Is How wide of a tire can I put on stock rims?

11.5" is the recommended maximum tire width for a 17x8" wheel. Although people have been known to install 12.5" tires with no reported problem...

 

17x8 widest I would go is a 285 but you gan get a 295 without major issue's. The tread will start to crown. ..........12.5", no way Hammer. That's way too big unless were talkin about 9" wide wheels?? A 285 is only 11.25" wide. A 12.5" wide Tire is a 315 series. Way too big.

17x9 You can go 295, but I'm pretty sure you have 8" wide wheels.

 

I thought the 275 285 number was for tire height and the smaller 70 number was for width?

 

If you bothered to READ my post, you would see that I said the LARGEST RECOMMENDED SIZE is 11.5".

I stated that people have put 12.5" wide tires on 8" wheels because I anticipate some of the dozens on this site who I know have done it to post "I've got 12.5" tires on my stock rims with no problem". Because you know damn well those posts will come, just like the "I've got 38 inch tall tires on my IFS front end and have no problem, Hammer is crazy to say 35 inch tires should be the max" posts pop up all the time...

 

I have 12.5 on my stock wheels. no problems at all. Pwned.

Are the stock 17's 8" wide??? If so 11.5" is even too wide really.
I understand what you are saying, but regardless of what ridiculous tire sizes that people may have doesn't make it the right tire choice or the smart tire choice. You can squeeze a 15" wide tire on an 8" wide rim if you really wanted to but it's not safe nor will it last. Anyone who thinks they can put any size tire they want on their wheels is an idiot. Your starting to accomodate them Hammer....lol


SEANUTZ 285 is in Metric. That means the tire is 285mm wide.(11.22") the second number whatever it may be. Lets say 70, so a 285/70/17 tire for ex. The 70 is the Aspect ratio. This is the tire's sidewall height. Meaning it's 70% of the width. So if you take 70% of 285mm you get 199.5mm tall from rim to outer edge. That's 7.85". To get total height, you need to double the aspect number. 199.5x2= 399mm or 15.7". Then you take the 15.7" and add in the rim size which is 17" So 15.7" + 17"= 32.7" tall tire with a width of 11.22"

i wouldnt go more than 3 more wide than the rim. i have been buying bigger tire for years and its kinda what i always lived by. never had any problems that way.

 

I have almost 20k miles with a tire that is "too wide" and have had not one problem with them. No crowning, no unusual wearing, and they haven't even popped off!!!
