What's not so funny is that we will be the old guys some day saying the same thing to the young guys.

Carfax don't mean squat to me personally. Any work I have ever done has never showed up on one. I do all of my own work so even a Dealers Oasis report wouldn't be any help. A carfax is only as useful as the people that proplery report everything to the Bureau. Small time shops don't report much if anything, so to say people should soley rely on a Carfax is obsurd. Sure it may have helpful info, but then again it may not.

being in another Country, I'm sure the Carfax idea is not the same over there as it is here. Ohh, and why is it important you found out that your EGR Valve was replaced??? That's not a big deal. Not like finding out your engine or tranny have been serviced ya know???? Gotta overlook the small stuff. The only thing that would show me any kind of significance with a replaced EGR vlave is either a failed unit but more so a Carboned up unit that happens to the Majority of cars on the road.

I'd just use copius amounts of common sense when buying a used truck.
Smell the transmission fluid and look at the engine oil on the stick.
Look for any work done receipts with the truck and service history etc.
Even though I do all the work over here in the UK on my truck, I still have all the little bills for oil and fluids and spark plugs etc and can match them up with my own typed up maintenance log.
It's all good provenance and at least shows you, that the owner has been doing something.
Take a good mechanic friend along with you and INSIST on a test drive, making sure you drive it yourself! If they wont let you.........walk away.
The truck must drive straight and true even when braking. No shuddering and make sure all the transmission and 4x4 works OK and smooth. Ask about if the truck has the stock LSD. If it has ask if it's been either replaced in the past under warranty, or upgraded to an aftermarket Detroit TruTrac or Aurburn unit. These LSD's are very problomatic and I personally would not trust a stock LSD as I had to change to a Detroit TruTrac due to the infamous clutch pack retaining issues.
Check on the rubber pedal covers for wear. Worn pedal covers and wear marks on the steering wheel indicate possible high mileage. Look on the insides of door panels and seals, plastics and rubber strips for paint overspray, indicating body work etc. All this stuff is good to look for in a used truck.
Hope this helps?

AL.

I kept the Cope, ditched the old lady, and started modding the truck...
