Default RPM at Start

When I start the truck, just for a second the rpms jump to 2000-2500 right as the truck starts, then settles back to the 600-700 idle. Just curious if this is normal or if anyone else has this happen. It's a 2004 QC 4x4 5.7. I always run mobil1 synthetic but it still can't be good for the engine to rev that high before the oil pressure has a chance to build up, can it?

Any thoughts?

Normal. On start up my RPM's go to just over 2000 (not as high as 2500) then drop to around 600-700 for an idle.
Completely normal for start up.

I have an '08. Never watched the rpms but the truck does rev high at first until i shift into gear, then it fdrops down. I would guess it goes just to 2,000rpms no more and then settles down.
Perfectly normal. i'm sure it depends upon start-up temp, air filter...etc But for the most part, your truck is normal and your paraonoid about nothing. Another one of those normal things that happen eveyday that nobody notices until they start looking for problems and think that's one of them.,,lol

mine will go up to ~1500 RPM and it doesn't make a difference about outside or engine temperature. then the same, ~ 20 to 30 seconds to gradually settle down to idle. i was worried at first but have read about others with the same experience.

Yeah, just went out and fired it up to get a reaction. 1850 rpms was the peak of starting and it stayed at 1600. Idle started to settle as a4twenty described.

I have noticed that it does it more when it's cold out.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease........as dirtydog pointed out, I'm probably just being paranoid

I think it has something to do with the cold start loop, when first started up?
Regardless of engine/ambient temps, my 03 Hemi truck always does it.
It's got to be a PCM engine start software issue.
