My 04 went in to the dealer for broken clips last Friday. They told me they are replacing the parts that are broken. WTF does that mean? He wouldn't clarify.

Anyways, what I want to know is. Those of you who have had yours fixed.
How confident were you with the repairs?
What's keeping this from happening again?

They replaced the retaining clips for the clutches and probably the clutches themselves.
part#J0994345AB clutch kit
and 05183722AA clips

when you catch them early this can be done, when the pin drops out and wedges in the case it usually eats up the carrier and sometimes the bearing caps. In some cases it would need a whole new axle assembly if it goes too long being F*d up

Thanks. Are the new clips any stronger?

Default Rear end update

So I pick up my truck Monday after having Chrysler pay for a rear end rebuild

Here's what was done:
  • New housing 5072511AG
  • New bearings 5072498AA & 507438AA
  • New seals 52070340AB
  • New clutches J0994345AB
HUH....my work order doesn't say anything about new clips

The clips wore deep grooves in the bearing caps and sent shavings into the bearings.
Anyway, the truck drives ALOT better. Much, much smoother. If the truck drove this way from here on out, I'd be a very happy man.

BUT, how long will this last? Should I expect visit to the dealer in the near future for another diff rebuild?

Trigger from my understanding the new clips aren't really any better than the old ones. As long as your truck is under warrenty though it isn't something to worry about. Just let dodge keep replacing the rear end for you. They don't seem to want to make a permanent fix for the issue.

+100.

That's why I installed a DTT in my truck.
No friction modifiers or clutch retaining clips to EVER worry about any more.
Also, once again it's not a question of "if" the clips will go again........rather "when"!

I like thousands who own these trucks, had to pay for it all ourselves, as we had no warranty.
It's a complete cluster f*** and design flaw that Dodge simply won't do anything about!
This has gotta' be the number 1 problem with Dodge 1500 LSD fitted trucks from 20003-05.
Soz for the rant.............rant over.
Al.

Detroit TruTrac install.

Okay. So what's different in the 06-09's? I was under the impression that all the 9.25" LSD's were the same from 02 to present.

If that's the case. Then Dodge will STILL be replacing rear ends, even on the new generation.

Nothing. he just installed an Aftermarket carrier that doesn't have the retaining clip failure.
They prob changed the whole carrier which is that cylindrical thing in the middle to the right of the ring gear which would have trhe clips already installed. The part numbers are part of a "kit" not just one piece.

You are correct. All the 9.25 LSD's are the same even going back further in years than '06 as well as the current '09s

Im getting my truck back today from the dealer for broken clips and metal all in the oil. It is under warranty but they dont want to rebuild the LSD and rather will flush it. I went round and round with them about this and they said the Chrystler rep would not approve the rebuild so I am calling Chrystler and writing a letter today. To my knowledge they did not fully inspect the unit. They pulled the passenger side bearing cap to remove the clip wedged against it and flushed the system. Well hell, I could have dont that myself and not been back on the road the next day. My truck has been down there since Monday morning and today is Thurs. Thats not what is so bad for me but rather flushing all the abrasive metallic material out of a contaminated system and wanting to send it back on the road. God forbid but if I had shavings in my engine oil, would they do they same? Whats the difference between the two systems? They are both mechanical with moving parts and lubrication. So needless to say I am not happy with the dealer.

What's different/better/worse with the 10.5"(?) AAM LSD on the 2500?
