Default 2004 1500 Dodge Laramie 4x4 - AWD to 4WD problem

Started having a problem with it jumping out of AWD into 4WD high without touching any controls. This has happened 3 or 4 times in the last month or so. I have to stop - put it in park and shut the engine off - Start it back up turn the control switch to 4WD and back to AWD and everything is fine again, until it happens again. If anyone one can point me in the right direction to help solve this problem - please do so. Thanks a lot.

AWD has a viscus/fluid type coupling to allow for changes in wheel speeds etc and effectively, disengages the torque to the wheels when necessary.
It requires that the transfer case fluid be changed at the recommended intervals. I've seen Jeeps with the Quadra-Drive system have similar issues with old fluid and even with new fluid not specifically made for that type of system...

With my Grand Cherokee, only dealer 245-247-249 fluid is recommended, and the Jeep forums are loaded with stories of issues and failed 4WD systems from guys who've gone away from it, even with high end lubes like Royal Purple and Amsoil. It's a unique system and requires a unique (and VERY COSTLY) lubricant. This is a rarity for me to suggest, but in your case, it's best to go through your local dealership...

download the FSM (CTD forum FAQ) and see what it recommends.
