Default Brakes

My brakes have been squeaking for a while now so I am wondering if I should change them and how much this should cost? Anyone know what a reasonable price for brakes are? Also, I can just swap them if I do a tire rotation myself right?

Thanks

Brakes are fairly cheap. You can get a set for around $30-40. What I always do is find the ones with a 'lifetime' guarantee, then just swap them out for free.

I have about 50% left on my pads, but they squeel like hell. What I would recommend doing is pulling your tires off, and spraying some brake cleaner on the pads while turning the rotor. This will clean them up pretty good, and help with the squeek, IF THE PADS ARE STILL GOOD.

Spraying brake cleaner won't stop the squeeling. Brake noise comes from 2 things.
1. Worn pads. Brake level guide is touching rotor.
2. Brake pads are vibrating inside the caliper.

Generally if your pads are good, the cause is vibration. Shims on the backside help and most Quality pads come with them however, I always spread brake squeek silicone on the surface of the pads that touch the caliper. Backside only. This will eliminate ANY noises. They sell tiny one use packets at the counter of parts stores for like $2. Well worth it.
Don't forget to apply some anti-seize to the caliper mounting bolts for easy removal next time or if you shall have trouble.

It is a very easy job, you can do the brakes in your driveway no problem.

I agree with dirtydog, squealing brakes are generally not caused by brake dust or dirt. However, if you remove the pads, clean everything well with brake cleaner, and apply "disc brake quiet" or brake grease (lightly) to the contact areas on the back of the pads the squeal might go away. But if you're going through that much trouble you might as well put on new pads.
