driving a truck out of gas
Man mine does the same damn thing, has been for about 50k now.. Its got 125k on it and I haven't really had a problem yet, could be a fluke, could be 2 different things wrong, but hell check your battery and start with the easy cheap stuff first then go on to looking into the more difficult expensive stuff, like messing with the fuel pump...
Heck, I think my check engine light has been on since I got her.. 75k miles ago...

UHHH, bad example. Automobiles have like 50psi of pressure in the fuel rails. Turning the car over with them unhooked is a bad thing!
If there is air in the lines your truck would simply sputter for a few seconds and then clear up. Fuel only takes maybe 7 or 8 seconds to get completely from the tank to the fuel rail even at idle. All air would be pushed directly to the fuel rail because it's pressurized.
Sputtering could mean fuel filter change..i.e. new fuel pump thanks to Chryslers genius design. Or possibly the fuel regulator check valve could be faulting???
barely start up meaning slowly to turn over or it turns over forever? When's the last time you had the plugs changed? They are every 30kmi or sooner.
I had a Dodge van I regularly ran down to "fumes". New fuel pump ($500 +) at 119K. Now I try to fill up before I get to 1/4 tank. Fuel pumps are 'spensive lil' so-and-so's. To the poster who asked the cost of changing the plugs: DIY: $30 on the Hemi. Good shop: $200 or so. Dealer: $300+.
running tank empty isnt good.. i know from other vehicles doing so you take chances on sucking up crud off the bottom of the tank, then filling it back up stirs it up... My buddies snowmobile had tons of issues after doing that.. constant fuel pressure issues and we had to bleed line a few times to clean out the grit.... Im not saying thats gonna happen to you but It could be a possiblitly since gas is a dirty liquid...
There are two main problems I have heard of from running the tank down like that. The first is you can start sucking any junk up off the bottom of the tank and clog up the filter. The other is that the pump uses the gas to keep the pump cool, so when you run it down like that you run the risk of buring up the pump.
