not 100% sure but search on here about lsd retaining clips.. or "c-clips".. The clips break apart and fall into the diff.. cause a big mess.. sounds like thats your problem

i just had the same problem, i thought it was the tires making a humming noise, turns out the pinion gear was falling apart, it started happening to me on my way to atlanta. i drove about a 1000 miles on it while it was making that noise, not a good idea, but i had no choice. took it to the dealer and they replaced it all under warranty.

my truck is in the shop for the same exact problem needed new bearings ring and pinion it was under the warrenty thats the only reason they are touchin my truck... i had the pinion seal done in july and they most likely crushed the bearing doing it the dealership will deny it but crushing the bearing doing a pinion seal is a common problem

Yep, it's automatic. You start hearing or feeling something in the rear end, you pull the pumpkin cover and have a look.
Even if you DO NOT have optional "self-expoding LSD feature" then you need to still look at the questionable ring and pinion and the spyders...

Mine whines at about 60mph and only at 60mph. But it started doing it about a month after I got my gears installed and thats been almost a year now. I have pulled the diff and there are no filings, no pieces of metal, nothing. Normal driving (25-55) there isn't any noise and 65mph+ there isn't anything.

I have a 2005 Ram 1500 with the 9 1/2 Dodge rear end and LSD! AKA the self destructing dodge rear end. At 69K I blew out the rear and the dealer covered it. It was a carrier bearing that went bad. This weekend coming back from an ATV trip it started doing it again!!! 11K miles after the first rebuild. The dealer admitted that this time it must have been because either the Tech didn't do it right or the pinion bearing was defective as I only drove it 11K miles. I guess there were two options for the 1500's the 9 1/2 dodge and the Dana 60. Has anyone done a swap from one to the other? I need details as Dodge puts the speed sensor in the rear. Thanks in advance!
