Default steering: Immediate shaft

I was at the dealer thought the new gears in the rear were gone again. It ended up being the rear u-joint. Anyways they say the steering rack is bad. On my receipt it says Immediate Shaft worn. Dealer says about a grand. What actually is the immediate shaft. I get a shake in the wheel when I hit bumps and stuff. It doesn't really bother me but if it needs fixing I might as well do it. Well what should I do from here. I really don't know much about the whole steering and the issues with the steering rack on these trucks. Where should I start?

I think you are reffering to an Intermediate Shaft. If you are that is the steering shaft that connects to your steering wheel to the rack and pinion steering. There is also an Intermediate shaft in your tranny, but I dont think that is the one your dealer is talking about. You can get them new for around 250 bucks...

Try tightening it down first. It takes a lot of torque to tighten it and if it's off by just a bit, it will have a slight looseness or shake in the steering. It's a 13mm bolt on one end and an 8mm allen socket cap on the other.
