how many coats of clear for the matte look
I painted my truck matte black about a yera ago. Its starting to chip in some areas... I think the guy that painted my truck didn't put enough coats of clear on it to protect the paint. i know that there is a matte clear coat they put on this type of paint. If anyone knows please let me know how many coats would be good because i am getting a family friend of ours to repaint my truck. pics 2 come.
Not sure what a matte look is but if the paint and clear is chipping already they didnt sand the original paint very well before they painted the car. I paint with ppg at work and wipe the car down with prepsall tack it off with a tack cloth then put down my base and go with a light coat of clear to start, let that sit for 5 minutes or until tacky. After that I go nuts laying it on pretty thick for 2 coats(5min between coats). If your friend isnt very familiar with painting I suggest he doesnt lay it on too thick on the second and third coat or he could run it pretty bad. So 3 coats of clear for the stock finish. It all comes down to personal prefrence I know some of my friends do 4-5 coats of clear for there personal rides.
if you want a matte finish youll have to call around and find some matte clear coat, or its just gunna be really shiny. ive seen them do it in petersons off-road, they painted a hummer h3 flat red and used a special flat clear coat on it. looked bada$$
i remember the magazine said it scratched pretty easy...
