Default Big 3 Upgrade

Has anyone done this mod or even know what im talking about? Back when i was a gm guy we did a mod called the big 3...which consisted of replacing the ground wire from the battery to the frame, the hot wire from the battery to the alternator, and the engine ground strap...upgrading these to a larger gauge wire...just wondering if anyone has done this and has any thoughts on it for boosting the electrical system up a bit.

I just did this on my Ram with 1ga wire and lots of lugs. I got some lug crimps from work and used them to crimp my lugs. Depending on how much relacing of the OEM wire you are doing, you will need about 20ft of wire. I used more than that because I added a second battery on the passengers side. Lemme see if I can count out all the wires I replaced for you.

1. 12v with a #1/#2 lug from the battery to the starter with a #1/#2 lug
2. 12v with a #1/#2 lug from the battery to a 1/0-2/0 lug to the fuse box with 2 1ga wires coming out of it. One went to the battery and the other goes to the alternator with a #1/#2 lug
3. Ground with a 1/0-2/0 lug from the battery one wire with a #1/#2 lug going to the frame and another wire with a #1/#2 lug going to the block
4. Ground with a #1/#2 lug from the battery to the side fender with a #1/#2 lug

I took the extra steps of taking another #1/#2 lug with a 1ga wire and going from the positive of my battery to one side of a battery isolator. One the other side of that isolator I took another 1ga with a #1/#2 lug and went to the positive of my second battery. On that second battery I went with a 1/0-2/0 lug from the ground to the frame with another #1/#2 lug and another #1/#2 lugto the block. There is an empty threaded hole right above the oil filter that takes a 3/8 bolt you can use for that ground to the block.
