Tire Tread Life and Traction
I am about to purchase a set of Ballistic Jester 20" wheels and tires. I'm up in the air about tires mainly because my brother just bought the Terra Grapplers AT and they don't look like they too much meat. I was all ready to buy the set when he bought them and now i can't decide. I do like the Toyo Open Country AT but is there any real difference in tread depth? I know i could get an MT but i really don't offroad, or should i say there isn't much offroading in southern NH. I want something that has some meat but will wear for 30k or so. Any input from anyone running Toyos, Nittos, Coopers, or whatever. Thanks Guys.
The Nitto's are a great A/T tire, but a little softer compound then the Toyo's, so expect them to wear just a bit faster. I've had tremendous success outta Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek tires over about the last 12 years or so.
I've got the Cepek Fun Country II's. 19k on them so far and a good 90%+ of tread left. I had the now discontinued Mickey Thompson MTX's on my '98 Ram RCSB 4x4 and when I traded the truck it had 68k miles on it, about 42k on the MTXs probably close to half the tread left. I'm sure I'da got close to 60k out of them. Basically, the recent release of the MTZs and ATZs took the place of the MTXs in the product line. I've got a hunting buddy with 33" MTZ's on his Chevy, and they have outlasted his previous tire, the Maxxis Buckshot Mudder already and still have plenty of good tread.
If you are on the fence as to an A/T or M/T, you may want to take a look at the Cepek Fun Country II's that I have. They are a true hyrbrid tire, right between a A/T and M/T. Although they are not an inexpensive tire by any means, the performance and longevity should even out the cost of ownership over the long haul...

Thanks for the help. I wasn't going to consider the Baja ATZ because of the extra cost but seeing that they wear a lot better it is worth the few extra bucks. Plus Mickeys have a rebate offer going on right now so the difference is only a few buck per wheels. Thanks again.
Check into the Cooper LTZ's. Great road manners and wipes the rain out of the way. Best water tire ever. Aggressive pattern and it makes near no road noise. I've had them for 5kmi now and near no wear.

The Cooper LTZs are a really good tire, I've read really good reviews on them so far. But for someone sitting on the fence between a true A/T tire and Mud Tire, I question if the Coopers are aggressive enough for him or have the ply rating he may need...
IMO they are a super choice for a 2WD or a daily driver 4x4 that seldom ventures off the pavement, and when it does, doesn't stray too far...

I have goodyear Wrangler Silent armors on my truck and I love them. I have not had them for long but, many people with them say they last a while. According to most reviews they excel in ice and snow.

They actually are more agressive looking in person with relatively deep tread.
I also have original (I think) Bridgestone Nittos on my 1974 Honda Trail 70 and they work great unless you are cornering at any speed above 15 miles per hour then they get mushy. (But that is for a motorcycle so I guess it won't count)
