converting auto to 6-speed
anybody know what it would take to convert a 5.7 with an auto to one with a 6-speed manual in it?? Im having tranny isues and ive always wanted a 6 speed, wondering if it would be cheaper to put a 6-speed in instead of a new auto.
thanks
thanks
You'll need to have ecu reflashed. You'll need a pedal assembly(brake too...I think it's smaller?), linkage parts, crossmember, hole through the floor, you'll have to find a DIY or something regarding your steering column. You may even have to get a new one? You'll have to hook-up the start-kill/neutral safety switch and a few other wires I'm sure of it. it certainly isn't for a beginner to try and tackle.
Your driveshaft might also be the wrong length. You'll need a flywheel rather than a flexplate for the engine.
What kind of 6 speed are you looking at? The Getrag 238 from the 1500's has never run behind a Hemi, so the mounting might be a challenge. The power of the Hemi is probably at the upper limit of the G238's capacity as well.
I've never driven a Ram with the 6 speed Mercedes G56, but it's gearned more like the NV4500 in my Ram 2500 work truck. Almost no need to use 1st, heavy throws, no quick shifting. The G238 in my Dakota is much more user friendly and alot less tiring in traffic.
No way it will be cheaper than a new automatic. But it would be cool.

Another consideration is the bell housing. I see six speed SRT-10 trans on eBay. What bell housing fits the hemi and will these SRT transmissions bolt to it? What's available in aftermarket transmissions? It would be great fun to build one.
Ya,Sounds like a can of worms to me,if you are burdened by a lot of extra money and time, and you don't use your truck as a daily driver then I say go for it!

I believe you could get a 2500 Hemi with the 6 spd... that may be your best bet. The automatic in these trucks sucks donkey *****, it has absolutely no ****ing clue what is going on. Shifting into overdrive at 35, only to immediately shift back into 4th, then right back into OD. WTF is that? When I nail it and it makes the 1-2 shift at WOT, it feels like a beginner trying to learn a stick... the front end will nosedive instead of steady acceleration normal to an automatic. Make a slight turn off the main road and give it gas? Good luck, it will immediately shift into top gear even though my foot is on the floor. The sad thing is that I have a programmer and it still does this ****. If you need a new tranny, and are capable of doing the work yourself, I would highly recommend the conversion. It's much easier than remembering to put it in tow/haul every single ****ing time you get behind the wheel. If I could do it all over again, I would gladly sacrifice my nice pull down cupholder/ash tray and get the 6spd. I'm not expecting too much from a truck, just a transmission that knows what gear to be in. It seems that we could do this far more effectively with nothing more than hydraulic pressure close to 70 years ago when the first automatics came out.
