Question New Oil change worst mileage WTF??

Hey all I did the new Valvoline 300,000 Engine/Oil guarantee last week with SynPower 5W-30 synthetic oil. I usually use Mobil One, first two times it was the regular Mobil one, and then I used the "Green Cap” Advanced Fuel Savings formula oil for the last one.

I had just got back from a trip up and back to Syracuse New York, and Long Island and you have to do the Valvoline oil change and register it before 75,000 miles. It was time for the oil change anyway @ 74635. While using Mobil One, we got any where from 17-22 MPG “UP”. We did 13-18 MPG coming “BACK”, we had an additional load in the bed of about 800+ lbs of NY Slate (Rock) and a new above ground pool that was loaded and all the traveling bags.

I took out all the excess weight out of the bed and inside when we got home, and then did the oil change. I had to run up to Charleston SC yesterday and was getting 13-18 MPG, remember no load and new different brand oil too. Is it possible that Valvoline isn’t as all cracked up as it’s claiming?? I mean even on DF people were saying it’s a very good to excellent oil and comparable to Mobil One. Anyone have any ideas why I’m getting the worst mileage after the change??

And yes I was driving about the same speeds up I-95/17 to Charleston as we did up and back to NY.

I dont think a different oil is going to give you THAT much difference. Was your air pressure in the tires good? And heavy cross winds? Ect?

Yeah same driving style and all, just don't know why the big difference. I'll keep going for the next 1,000 or so miles but if it doesn't improve then it's back to Mobil One

yea i read somewhere that if your vehicle idles for 10 seconds it uses more fuel than is required to restart it... i always leave it runnin just because of wear n tear, i woul drather pay for the gas. but it just seems like cutting off and restarting makes less sense due to wear on yur starting and other parts

Yeah, I got to agree with WEED on this one. I don't believe that just changing the oil made that much difference in milage. You got something else going on there bro.

also, remember that you are comparing two different drives. the difference in hills and such from one drive to another will make a difference.

Weird...did you drive through a really dusty area? Your air filter might have sucked up some dirt and need a cleaning.

I think your just so concentrated on the MPG's after the change maybe you didn't realize how bad the mpg's were before. Because changing your oil will not make that difference. i would have to say changing your differential fluid and transmission fluid would make a bigger difference than just an oil change. going from Mobil 1 to Valv Syn. is basically the same friggin oil. 5w-30 M1 vs 5w-30Syn is going to be identical in mileage.
Ohh, gas saver??? thinner oil!

Head wind makes a Ginourmous difference. Plus not to mention the fact that NY state has 10% ethanol in their gas which drop MPG's.
