Default Exhaust flow question

So...i have been thinking about this for awhile just have never asked others opinions. Everyone is adding headers because of the extra flow meaning more power....so my question is instead of putting on long tubes and getting the extra flow there couldnt you just cut the factory y pipe and run duals without mufflers for the same effect?? i mean wouldnt that flow just as good as headers with a y pipe and muffler????

The factory manifolds are pretty restrictive, and almost any aftermarket header from shorty's to long tubes flow better than the stock manifolds. Look in this DIY for some pics of the stock manifolds vs long tubes https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen-ram/199300-pacesetter-lt-headers-diy.html . For some reason the link isn't working, just copy and paste it into your browser address and it will take you there.

he's right, headers flow better than stock. so if you put any header with a muffler like magnaflow or aeroturbine you would be a lot better.

No I don't think it will give the same amount of power. The OEM y-pipe, OEM muffler, and OEM manifolds are all restrictive and replacing any of them w/ something that flows better will net you some power. Also you have to consider the stock cats and if you are going to remove/replace those on your dual setup. The only way to know for sure would be to have dyno's of your desired setup vs. a longtube setup like the one you describe.

Absolutely NOT!

ohh boy, I'll try and make it quick.
LT headers flow well because of the length of the Primary tubes. (each exhaust tube) It scavenges the gases away from the cylinder head for cooler combustion and more efficient flow. The merge collector at the bottom plays another big role. The longer the collector the better the flow. Dynatches have very short collectors while Kooks and TTI are very long.
Stock manifolds all flow into one pipe right away. Not good for flow.
Shorty headers and replacing the y-pipe is prob the sheapest and most effecitve gains you will see. However, going that distance, your better off going LT as Shorties are a direct interchange for the stock manifolds making it easy for people to keep everything else stock.

Go LT's or go home! That's my motto.
