Default Differential problems

OK, after reading through countless posts I realize the stock LSD rears are junk. I'm having a slipping/grabbing feeling and sometimes a growling noise from my right rear when turning at slow speeds or when turning from a stand still. Does this in reverse when turning too. Don't hear anything at speed but it's probably there just not loud enough. I've read on here that $1200 is not out of line. I've also read that aftermarket replacements run $400-$500 + a couple of hours labor. What do you guys recommend? Secondly do any of you think there's any chance that changing the gear oil will prolong things a while? Also, is this something I can tackle myself or should I take it in to a shop? (I built engines for 23 years so I know my way around a wrench somewhat). If I take it in, what type of shop? (Dealer, transmission shop etc.). Thanks for any input.

I think if you havent popped that cover to see what might be going on then now is the time do so. Keep in mind you will need to add the friction modifier back in for the LSD. I just swapped out my OEM LSD even though I never had any issues out of it. I went to bigger tires and need to use different gears. I went to 456s with an Auburn LSD and a master bearing kit while it was being taken apart. All of that is about $800 plus the shops around here wanted 400-450ish for the work.

I had some issues as well with my diff, and since my truck is under warranty still I took it to the stealer. They pulled the cover and inspected it and told me that there is nothing wrong and put in new fluid, my problem is still there but not as noticable. It's easy to change the fluid yourself, can't do anymore damage by putting in new fluid atleast you can see if there are any chunks or stuff floating around that shouldn't be floating around.
