Default I have an oil leak... :-(

Hey everybody,
I was looking at the driveway the other day and noticed that I have an oil leak. I cleaned everything under the truck and traced it down to the crank seal. When the engine is running there is a drip coming out of the seal from the crank pulley. I have been looking for a good write up on doing this, however whenever somebody is doing this job they are usually replaceing other parts as well.
My truck is a 2004 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi in it with 160,000kms on the ODO, would somebody be able to help a guy out and direct him into replacing the seal? Dirctions, and maybe some pics? I am pretty savy on workin on motorcycles, but never had any problems with any of the vehicles I have had, my truck and my vette. Anywho, any help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch guys.

If I was you I would go out and get a repair manual like haynes or something if you plan on working on your truck for things like this. To replace the seal you will have to remove the belt, pull the pulley, remove the seal, replace the seal, reinstall pulley if it's in good shape or replace it, and reinstall the belt. You can rent a pulley installer/puller set from somewhere like autozone to get the pulley off and back on. You can remove the seal w/ a seal removal tool or screwdriver, but be careful not to nick or gauge the seal bore or the crankshaft. To install the new seal you need a seal driver or large diameter socket to drive it into the cover. You will need to check the surface of the pulley hub that the oil seal rides on for grooves from it's contact w/ the old seal, if it's grooved a press on seal can fix the sealing surface. You will also have to remove the clutch fan and part of or all of the shroud to allow for easy access to the pulley and seal. All of this info is from a Haynes manual that also has pictures of the job and some more details.

Here is some info I pulled out of AllData for you. See if it will help. See the attachment below.

Right on. I have a belt puller and a new seal in my garage. From what I am reading, should I drain the oil? I know it is just splashed on the crank, but should I anyways? Also, If I can fit I guess it isn't necessary to remove the fan or shrouding hey? Oh yeah, what's the torque supposed to be on that bolt??

Would you guys be also able to give me directions for the rear seal, just incase the rear is leaking as well. I don't see anything coming out even after the cleanup and running it and driving it around, but having the info would be a great benefit. Thanks a bunch guys.

Spend the money-----You really need to at least get a Haynes manual, and even better is the Factory Service manual.

You need a real manual, not a Haynes bird cage liner.
