No resonator = Nice Sound! :)

A lot of our trucks have two resonators, one before the muffler and one after. My 07 1500 4x4 Hemi only had one after the muffler and was so quiet that it sounded whimpy. I went to Lou's Custom Exhaust in Westport, MA and they did just what I wanted. They took off my tailpipe section, cut out just the resonator and replaced it with a piece of stainless. The truck now has a nice tone, not too loud but not whimpy. For all you older guys who still want a nice sound without the headache, I personally feel this is the way to go. Again, my truck doesn't have any resonators now. If your truck has two resonators then I would suggest removing the rear one first and after driving it for at least 100 miles if the tone isn't enough for you then remove the front one. No need to buy the expensive catback systems to get a good sound or even a dual look. If you want the dual look, have your shop fit a Y pipe after the muffler and fabricate some pipes out the sides or the back. I tried the Magnaflow 16700 dual catback system and was annoyed by the obnoxious resonance in the cab due to the small size of the muffler. I think another reason the Magnaflow didn't work for me was because my truck didn't have a stock resonator before the muffler.

I've still got my CATs, but I took off the resonators. The CATS are prior to the Y pipe from the manifold and the resonators are located after the Y pipe before and after the muffler. You're right though, CATs are a serious requirement in most states and I wouldn't recommend taking them off unless they are not required in your state.
