Unhappy Help with rust on axel!!!!

I've just powdercoated my bumpers along with painting the underbody black that was missed by the under coat. So, i was spraying the lower portion of my rear shocks when i noticed a small portion of the undercoat on the axel was pealing away. I peeled off some the undercoat and found layers of rust the axel. It look like it started from a bunch of rock chips on the axel and just started rusting away. I cleaned it up pretty good and went ahead and spray that portion with a couple coats of paint. My question is, Should i be worried? How thick is the axel as far as rusting through. Please help with any input.

the axle housing itself is pretty hefty like 1/4" thick i think? had the same prob on my truck, but it wasent painted first so i hit it with a rust inhibitor wich turned the rust black then i sprayed it black with corrosion resistant paint, and did the same to the front end

Dracos got it right, cleaning it up and painting it just paves the way for more rust to build, leave the rust ON the axle lol.
