Default Cruise control problem

I have the cruise controls on the steering wheel of the '03 ram and everything works fine except the coast/decel button. Sometimes it will work other times it won't. Sometimes when it won't decelerate, if I hold it long enough it kicks my cruise off. Seems like maybe the contacts are dirty. So you know how to pull the buttons off without doing any permanent damage or should I be looking for something else wrong???
