Default axle questions

i own a 2005 ram 1500 bighorn edition. recently i got a set of toyo open country MTs and new goliath wheels, so naturally i felt like playing in the mud, but before i do i have a couple questions. mainly about the axles in 4WD modes. are they locked or are they limited slip? i thought that they are limited slip in 2 wheel drive and locked an 4wd mode for maximum traction. any info or help on the subject would be appreciated. P.S. everything is stock on the truck

The only ram that comes with locked axles is the 2500 series Power Wagon. The limited slip rear axle is available as an option on all other rams whether 2WD or 4x4. Just because you bought a 4x4 doesn't mean you get all 4 wheels to spin. In fact if you don't have a limited slip, all you get is 2WD, 1 front wheel and 1 back wheel.

Yup, LS in the rear and open in the front. Found that out the hard way about a month ago, Got stuck in a field while in 4wd and had to have my friends 2wd pull me out, Slightly emarassed about it.

sucks that a 4x4 is not really a 4x4, but a 4x2. Although a bit of breaking can turn it into a 4x3...
