Default LSD Diff?

Please excuse the ignorant question. I have been reading alot about clutch pack retaining clips backing out of LSD rear ends and causing havoc. As I understand it, this only happens on limited slip diffs and not open diffs. I just had my fluid changed when I bought the truck a month ago before I knew about this issue. How would I be able to tell which rear end I have? I am not experiencing anything with truck to lead me to believe I may have this problem but am planning on saving to purchase a decent LSD for the "when" if I do have currently have the faulty LSD.

The truck is a 2002 1500 QC, 4.7 liter auto. I have a build sheet and on there it says 3.55, 9.25 LD........not LSD. In the glove box it only says 9.25 corporate and 3.55 with nothing after it. On my Ford, LSD specifies the limited slip designation, but what does LD stand for? Thanks in advance for any help.

From the pics it looks like yours fell victim to the retaining clip issue. Inside your glove box, with your axle info, what designates yours as limited slip? If you remember next time you dig in there peak at the sticker and let me know. Thanks weedahoe. Great pic BTW, looks like you have a good deal of work and pride in that truck. Looks good.

Chrysler calls it "anti-spin" on their build sheets. Go do a burn out, and see if you leave one track or two. Two = LSD.

Okay, no where on any documentation on the truck does it say "anti spin". I read somewhere that is both back wheels are off the ground and if you turn one and the other spins the same way than this is LSD, but if the other spins the opposite way than it is open. Any truth to that? I did this and the spin oppositely so I am crossing my fingers that this is the case. If my diff is indeed open, would I still have to worry about that additive? Thanks.

No truth to the one wheel spins one way, the other ........etc.
I do have a DTT fitted due to my clutch pack clips going **** up and my DTT, does not behave like that. The weels still spin opposite of each other when turned so this is not a true test.
There has to be some "loading" on either the clutch pack or the torque sensing gears, to make the other wheel lock up and spin the same way. Up on axel stands, this does not happen.
You could do a big burnout and see if you have two lines of black rubber down the road. But I have seen a "peg leg" burn two lines of rubber as well. Mst have been the conditions at the time.
The LD I believe means "light duty" and your documentation as Pyro said, should say "anti-spin".
To really tell if you have an LSD 100%, you need to open up the pumpkin and take some pics and post them up. We will let you know if you can't tell.
Either that or get one of those LED ortho scopes, the ones that can look at your cylinder bore down the spark plug hole and put it in the fill hole and have a look for the stock lsd.

Just back up on your grass or in dirt and quickly stab the gas. really easy to tell.
My guess is you have an open diff so no issue to worry about.
I have my window sticker right here and it says "Anti-Spin" Differential.....$325
So if you have no charge of $325, then you've got an open diff.

One wheel on somethin' slippery, one wheel on sumpin' with traction. Goose it. If it moves, it's LSD. If one wheel just spins, it isn't. "LD" stands for Light Duty, probably a peg-leg.

Done. Passenger tire on gravel, drivers on asphalt. Passenger tire spins, drivers tire just sits there and looks at me. So.....peg leg it is.

You have no worries about clip retainers destoying your diff, being a peg leg.
But to get better traction if necessary in the future, you can always retro fit an lsd like a Detroit TruTrac or an Aurburn.
