your radio is fine . good solid radio. all radios out of the box have no watts you have to build them and slap external liners on them to boost power . take it to a shop et a super mod and a swing kit . match that with a good will 5000. you can talk a few miles

What are you getting for range now? I heard that the dual antennas act off eachother and screw up your reception.. I dont know much about cbs so Im just starting to figure it out before I mount mine, Its a cobra 29LTD classic so I guess basically the same as yours 08 ram.. I dont want huge range for my cb cause I have a vhf for that, the cb is basically just for talking to the convo in the mountains when we are camping or 4x4ing.. distance will be from bumper to bumper to at most 1 mile.. What if you put 2 antennas and only hooked up one? same problem? I was just going to use a couple firesticks since I my buddy gave them to me for free..

First of all, I never meant to imply that your radio was junk. not at all. I any radio can be amp'd up like RH said. Sorry for the confusion.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is what kind of terrain are ou going to be talking in, and how far are you going to want to be reaching out. For mountain terrain, and just one mile, im sure a 102" whip would be suitable.

Sorry I wasnt implying that you said those ones suck, I was just saying that I have the same one and wasnt expecting huge range out of it anyways.. Do you think with the 102" whip Id still get 1 mile in the mountains even with it mounted behind the cab in the stake pocket? What about if I used the super mod and swing kit like ramhunter is saying? What will i get with it then approximately?

hey that radio is a good radio and the fiberglass whips are decent, but you want to get as much of the antennas above the cab of hte truck as possible because it will cause left reflect off the cab. as far as getting the coax in the truck i found a plug in the floor board and ran it up through there and under the carpet. i have had my radio in many places from the dashboard to the floorboard to the ceiling and it can be mounted anywhere just use the imagination.

Your radio does not need to be amped just yet. figure out what you want the radio for and go from there. If you want it just to listen then an amp is an expensive piece for no reason. if you are gonna be talking the talk out there then you might want to get an amp to walk the walk. PErsonally i run a radio without an amp and i get out great.

If you want to ditch the fiberglass whips then go for a 102" stainless steel whip from radioshack with a spring. This antenna will give you good swr and it will give you the best ears to hear for sure. If you do go to one antenna move your mount to the center of teh truck so that it has a bigger ground plane giving you better reception

if you are looking for a decent stainless antena i have a new willson 1000 or "lil will " for sale. was used once till i reralised i needed a willson 5000 pm me if interested.

back on topic everytone is giving you great info on this thread . i second the no 2 antana as it will work but on a stock radio i would do the stainless whip on top the cab to get the most out of the stock radio. and for the record a swing kit and a super mod will only run you about 80 bucks installed from a cb shop. well worth it to get some more watts. but like i said you want to get accross the states get a liner .

80 bux huh? how much power are we talking here? lol. Im going to have google it up. Im wanting to throw a little more power at my import radio.

Just so you know, a fiberglass antenna isnt referred to as a "whip", just for future lingo. Its called a stick.

I had a lil wil when i first started, and had a wilson 1000 to replace it in a matter of a week or so. My SWR was consderably lower with the 1000. Not to mention I like the 60" whip a whole lot better. lol

I would hit ole ramhunter up on that wilson 1000. Pretty sweet antenna.
