Power Steering Failed NEED HELP!!
Hate for this to be the way to find the Forum but I have an issue the power steering in my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, As I was going to pull into the driveway I lost my power steering. When I got into the yard I noticed the power steering fluid in the street and a hose dangling from the passenger side. Im assuming this is the power steering hose but can someone tell me if this was caused by a rack/pinion failure or a simple disconnect of the hose?
Thanks
Thanks
Also have an 04 ram and had and noticed a leak. I found that the clip that holds the hose on to the rack to not be providing enough pressure to keep a total seal. Simple hose clamp with some lucas power steering magic and she's good as new. I'd say you might of had the same problem! This is where I would start and its an easy/cheap fix!
that clamp holding that hose has a tendency to loosen up and leak. as silver said, put a hose clamp on there when you put it back together. for power steering to go just like that without a warning or noise, chances are that all it is is that hose let go and you lost fluid. refill using ATF+4 (auto transmission fluid) and use the following instructions, should be good to go:
STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWER STEERING
PUMP - INITIAL OPERATION
WARNING: THE FLUID LEVEL SHOULD BE
CHECKED WITH ENGINE OFF TO PREVENT INJURY
FROM MOVING COMPONENTS.
CAUTION: MOPART ATF+4 is to be used in the
power steering system. No other power steering or
automatic transmission fluid is to be used in the
system. Damage may result to the power steering
pump and system if any other fluid is used, and do
not overfill.
Wipe filler cap clean, then check the fluid level.
The dipstick should indicate COLD when the fluid is
at normal temperature.
(1) Turn steering wheel all the way to the left
(2) Fill the pump fluid reservoir to the proper level
and let the fluid settle for at least two (2) minutes.
(3) Raise the front wheels off the ground.
(4) Slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock 20
times with the engine off while checking the fluid
level.
NOTE: For vehicles with long return lines or oil
coolers turn wheel 40 times.
(5) Start the engine. With the engine idling maintain
the fluid level.
(6) Lower the front wheels and let the engine idle
for two minutes.
(7) Turn the steering wheel in both direction and
verify power assist and quiet operation of the pump.
If the fluid is extremely foamy or milky looking,
allow the vehicle to stand a few minutes and repeat
the procedure.
oh, and welcome to DF!
