What do you know about lockers?
Hey all, Im fixing to regear here in the next couple of months, and Im considering having a locker installed in the front while im at it. I dont want to spend tons of cash on it, but I was thinking about a simple detroit locker, or a powertrax limited slip setup. Ive never really seen any threads on here about lockers, so I thought I would ask. I woul dlike to search it, however the search doesnt work very well on a slow wireless connection. Once gain, damned offshore platform. LOL
Anyways, let me know what you guys are running of anything, and what you guyus have heard. So ya know, I know if I do go with a locker, I am set on doing the front, and not the rear. Also, Im staying away from the E-lockers because of the price tags. Its what I really want, but I cant see spending another $800 on a good E-locker.
Thanks again

All I know is that non selectable lockers in a front end are a real PITA.. When I go to do my rearend, whenever that happens, Im gonna go with a detroit, all Ive heard is good things about them so it makes sense that the front ones would be good also, trouble is if they actually make one for the front? Any reason in doing the front and not the back? seems kind of *** backwards, no offence. The only time ive seen a truck with a locked front end is on 4x4s that see ALOT of serious offroading and always a combination with a rear locker. There was alot of talk on a 4x4 forum Im on up here about front lockers and snow on the trails and I hear that its hard to keep the truck going straight in slippery conditions. This is all information ive gathered when I was looking to spool the front end of my furd that I was building before I bought the dodge. hope that helps
From what i've read,
Any sort of non manual operated locker is going to be noisy, clunky, and have bad street manners. Friends that have had them have told me about it.
Tires chirping, clunking noises etc. Loud pops. Just bad bad street manners. It's basically the lag time from full lock to functioning differential that causes it to do that. Doesn't exactly seem like the safest idea.
They're not meant for daily drivers basically.
I've never heard of the powertrax but i just googled it and it seems to somehow solve those problems. I didn't get to in depth into the technical reasons why but here's a link to the review.

I'm actually thinking of buying that one now because i'm in the market for a new differential soon also.
Limited slip differentials are in between the two basically. You wont get full power to the other wheel, but it will usually be enough, and they have good street manners. But the clutch packs tend to wear out sooner.

I dont have an answer, however am also interested in this subject. Same boat, gonna gear pretty soon, and am debating the locker, only I want mine in the rear. I was leaning towards Detroit, only for the pure reason that I am from Detroit. Stooopid reasonings, but eh...
like said above, i have heard nothing but good things about the detroit true trac (DTT)... i am strongly considering having one put in my truck because i just dont trust the stock POS... but i also want to regear at the same time but with a 4x4 that will cost a lot of $$$. i have never heard of a front locker for out trucks but i would imagine you would run into some drive issues with a non manual locker in the front...

CANNOT PUT A LOCKER OR LSD IN THE FRONT, you have a IFS! Lockers and Limited Slips are for solid axles.
A great setup in a SFA truck is a Detroit Locker in the rear and a TruTrac in the front, but not really for a daily driver. If you want that type of traction in a daily driver truck, then selectables front and rear are the way to go, although VERY pricey.
A non-selectable locker is a PIA on a daily driver. Get you a reliable Detroit TruTrac or Auburn LSD in the back...

Had both the reall crappy stock lsd in my diff, which then developed the INFAMOUS
retaining clip issues.
Stock LSD had good traction when working with the occasional "judder" when the clutches engaged, even with the correct amount of LSD additive and no retainer clip problems. So in my IMHO not nice as you think your the diff's going bad most of the time??? Eventually mine did ARGHHHH!!!!!
I relaced the stock LSD with a DTT and have had ZERO issues with it. Works when it has too and I forget it's there, most of the time.
Excellent product and got me out of a few jams in the snow over here in the UK of late. Seamless power transfers all the time.
Hope this helps?
