Have an 02 Ram 4x4 w/ 5.9 auto. Trans seems to shift fine in all gears but won't go into park for some reason. No shift kit or anything has been installed. Any suggestions please.

 

Does it click into all gear stops? I dont know if this is possible but maybe the linkage somehow screwed up and even though your shifter on the column in bottoming out in "P" its not actually reaching park on the tranny.. Or have you slammed it into park while still moving recently? that more plausible and could have sheered off the parking pin. those are the only ideas I got, I hate trannys, only part of my truck I wont touch.. On another note on the first problem you could go under the truck and undo the linkage, id suggest with someone inside with the foot on the brake and ebrake set, and you can grab the linkage on the tranny and shift it into park and all the gears. that will give you a deffinite answer on wether its something to do with the tranny or something wrong between the linkage on the tranny to the steering column..

one more thing i just thought of, i remember my buddies 06 f150 was a cable shift linkage and it snapped, but you would know for sure if that happened. I cant remember if these trucks are cable or some sort of metal bar set up like the older trucks.. either way shifting it on the tranny by hand will narrow down the problem to a specific area.

 

I would also post this in the 2nd gen Ram section, see if you get more responses over there since the 2002 model year was 3rd gen body and 2nd gen transmission/engine.

The linkage is definitely a possibility.
