Default Changing Tranny Fluid Question

Has anyone changed their own tranny fluid. And if so is there one or two filters that need to be changed. I've heard different things. This is for my buddy's 2003 ram 2500 quad cab extended bed with the hemi 5.7 liter. I assume it is the same for my 1500 but I wasn't sure. Either way I'm not sure about the filter issue.

There are more than a few threads on this. Assuming the 500 is the same as the 1500, there is a flat filter you pull down and out after removing the one bolts that holds it in. You will need pick to pull the o-ring out. The other filter is a canister screw on like your oil filter.

The pan holds about 7-8 quarts and to change all of it you need about 17 quarts.

To change it all you will first drain the pan and change the filters. Then put everything back together and fill it with oil. Take loose one of the trans lines by the cooler and place a 3/8 hose on the line and put the other end in a bucket. Crank the truck to let it pump some put and then shut the truck off to refill the pan. Keep doing this until you run out of or or the color of the oil changes.

Also, it is best to replace all of the trans pans bolts as the heads easily snap off.

When I changed mine I got the filter kit from Rock Auto, they had the best prices that I found anywhere for both filters.

The job is easy enough, but it's messy. Change the flat filter every 30K, the spin-on every 60K. Clean the pan thoroughly and torque the pan bolts to 105 in/lbs.

Is there a special tool required to remove either of the filters?

No, but you will need a mechanics pick set to pull out the o-ring where the flat filter goes up in at.
