Default ive been challenged twice (kinda)

ok guys ive been challenged to a race by a couple of guys. I met up with a couple of guys from my highschool yesterday and we were all talkin bout our cars. were all planning on going to lapeer dragway as soon as summer rolls in. the first race will be against a 4.o jeep. Ive agreed to race him with my winter setup which means my box with 500 pounds of sand in it will be in the bed. well I think ill beat him.

the second race is the other guys mustang. this is the challenge. its a mid to late nineties one dont know much about it other than its and overhead cam motor with exhaust and top end work (something about a PI swap?) he's agreed to race me without his funny gas.

so what can I do to beat these guys. first thing i was thinking is traction. even with the sand in the bed right now this thin will spin tires all damn day. how can I get it too hook? should I bite the bullet and buy some slicks or is there a cheaper way? im gonna try and do a few performance mods before than but this truck is my daily and I dont want to go too hard core.

should I go with cam? or gears (ive got 3.55), or just a tuner? what yall think?

too summarize
1. slicks yes or no? if no than what else
2. whats best
a. cam
b. gears
c. tuner
d. other

thanks guys!

First thing you should do is head out to the track or somehow find out what your 1/4 mile is right now. It will give you something to build off of and you'll have an idea about what you need.

Secondly, whats your budget?

Third, you will probably need everything that you listed. Slicks is a little extreme though, it would be different if you were racing against slicks.

gears are definitely going to help your off the line performance a ton. those are almost a must. a tuner is going to increase your overall performance, also better shifting. what all do you have done to your truck already if anything?

ive done nothing just got it in january. shes rolling on 115000 miles now so i dont wanna sink too much into it. the thing with slicks is i cannot hook up right now so if i get gears its just gonna more of a problem

budget. id like to stay under a grand. especially since its just one race but i may turn into a once a month thing you know

the jeep should be easy to beat if your spinning with 500 lbs of sand back there let a lil air out of your tires that will give you a better hook up how .. how much air i dont know but you can try a lil by lil till it hooks up good and the mustang for him to have work done to it must be a gt with 4.6 if it 99 or new it will run around a 14 sec if older it will run around 15 sec .. i have out ran a few mustang gt but they were stock ... but good luck and get a tuner for sure

i wouldnt underestimate that jeep... is it a stick? my brother had a 4.0 cherokee 5 speed and that thing hauled... could burry the speedo in third

have you done the TMR delete mod yet? i would say gears too but if you spin like you say you do you could have issues... slicks are a waste of money unless you plan on going to the track a lot... hell, do a cam that will run off a canned tune (like a comp 260) and change your valve seals and timing chain while you're in there...

with 3.55's you probably wont beat the rustang, and that jeep will give you a run too...

gud luck and take some dam video!!

Do you gave an open dif or a LSD/locker. At least a LSD would let you hook up real good.

The tuner would be a great upgrade, it would help with the shift points and your 0-60 times.

Another good thing would be to increase the airflow in your truck With a cold air intake or some kind of after market air intake.

And exhaust to go let everything flow nicely
