2002 dodge ram SLT
107000 miles
When my truck is put into 2WD my truck rumbles, shakes and makes some really loud noise but when I put into 4WD the truck is fine. I just had this issue start. My 4WD is now not working. It will be engaged in 4wd (lights shows on dash) but I am only getting the back 2 tires to spin. I had the tires spin on some ice and it sounds like metal on metal "chain" type sounds underneath truck. Have you guys seen this before? i am new to the Dodge family, just bought this truck a few months ago and dont want this to start my dodge experience. I took it to a shop and gentleman thinks it may be the front differntial, he stated hes going to drain and replace the fluid to see if that fixes, (he said he did this on a keep and it worked)...i got my doubts as I heard metal, like something is broke or something.....

Sounds to me like a broken chain. In any case, I would stop driving the truck immediately before you do more damage. A chain cost around $100 to replace (if you do it yourself), but if the peices of the chain (if that is in fact what it is) start getting thrown around, it will destroy the whole case.

Does that explain why it would violently shake in 2WD but has no shake in 4WD? A mechanic said he looked at the transfer case and there seemed to be no issues...I may need a second mechanic to look at it... I does seem like a chain issue due to the sound I get one the truck back tires spin..it seems like a chain is spinnin and hit metal as it goes....
