Default My 2008 4.7 spark plug adventure!

Well, let's just say it was fun and pretty easy ONCE I HAD THE RIGHT TOOL. The 2008 4.7 has 16 plugs - 8 intake and 8 exhaust. The manual recommends the intake (top) plugs changed at 30K miles. I have about 37K so I figured it was about time.

To start, the shaft that the spark plug is in is extremely narrow. A regular socket will barely fit. I started off using a Craftsman 5/8" socket with a little grease on it and a 6" extension. I was able to get the first plug loose and out with a little careful pulling. The main issue was the extension would come loose from the socket. So, I put the new plug in and snugged it down. Well, the socket was not coming out. No matter what I did, NO WAY. So, what to do because at this point, my truck was down a plug. I called my dealer and spoke to service. They said they use a Snap-On 6" long socket. I looked on line and that particular socket is like $69!

So, I contacted a local Snap-On dealer guy. He did not have that socket, but had a 6" locking socket extension. And the Snap-On sockets are the thinnest around. Of course, he was not close to me so the soonest I could obtain this would have been tomorrow.

One of my neighbors owns an auto shop, so I called him to see if the Snap-On truck comes by his shop on Fridays. I explained the situation to him, and he told me to come on down and he may have something that would work. Well, he had the 5/8" socket and the locking extension and I could borrow it overnight. Thank you, David!!

Well, once I obtained that little gem of a tool, it took me approximately one hour to do all eight. BTW, the passenger side closest to the firewall is a biyatch to get to. Anyway, all 8 are changed and I am happy.

Just thought I would share the experience so others can be prepared. It is tough to get into a job and realize that you do not have the right tool.
Also, my old plugs still looked pretty good, even though the gap was a little larger than it should have been.

The coil packs on top of the plugs have a 10mm nut holding them in. They come loose fairly easy with a little wiggling. It is easier if you remove the boot on the side and the wiring harness first.
