very smart ....i need to fig out how to get a usb in my truck but i want my h.u to be able to read the music on it maybe put a harddrive in the glove....i think ill have to upgrade the h.u for that though....very good idea fk ill have to remember this one....
Does your radio have an aux 3.5mm input? You might be able to wire a plug to the backside of a usb plug, and then plug your usb in that way. There are 4 wires plus the shield, so I think that could work. 1 pos, 1 neg, plus 3 for the two stereo channels and one return. Thoughts?
Okay well I tried hooking my external hard drive up to my radio usb port. Didnt work, i dont know if i need to organize them differently in the HD or what?

On my non-truck (Honda Accord) I have a JVC deck with a USB input. I've plugged in just about every USB device I could imagine just to see what would happen (portable drives, cameras, I-pod, etc).
One thing I noticed is that, in the case of this JVC anyway, it wouldn't read anything that was too big. I plugged in a 16gb thumb-drive, loaded with songs and it just wouldn't read anything. On the other hand, my regular mix is on an 8gb thumb drive and it works fine.
When I tried a small portable hard-drive (80gb, I think), it didn't read anything and the only thing it had on it was .mp3 files. I'm no expert on this stuff, but I'm thinking the receiver just boggles at storage devices over a certain size.
