From 14 to 5,8 miles/gallon in just 3 days
Hello..
I have a question that has been asked many times, but the symptoms are just not the same as I am having.
My Dodge Ram 1500 2006 5.7 HEMI 4 door (everything is standard from factory) is using quite a lot of fuel today. I know that the display is not correct, but it’s been on 14 miles per gallon for 4 months now and suddenly it dropped to 5,8 miles per gallon. (Since I am from Norway I put in the metric to: Before: 1,6 l/mil now: 4.0 l/mil).
I have reset the computer and driven 3 days with this fuel consumption and I see that the fuel gauge is falling faster.
Any tip on what could be wrong?
I wanted to ask here before taking it to the shop because it $350 an hour at my local dodge shop.
Sorry for any spelling errors or if any sentences are unclear!
Best Regards
Audun

wow so I guess your sure its sucking your gas tank dry? How many miles on it/does it need a air filter/ fuel/ oil change/ sounds like more fuel is being wasted via your on board computor try another chip/or have it reprogramed. Thats all I got for ya. good luck and thread back on the cure
There has to be something that has been changed or has failed to get that kind of drop. Are you getting any codes? Did you work on it and a rag get stuffed into the airbox? PCM controls A/F ratio one of the sensors could be sending a signal to richen the mixture. As you can tell impposible to say without seeing the truck. $350 m/hr rate, I am guessing you really love that truck...
good luck
good luck
Thanks for all your replies.
My car has 27 000 miles (40 000km) on the road and I have not touched it.
I will do a new fillup and reset the trip to calculate more exactly.
A certified workshop changed oil 2 months ago, I haven’t checked the air filter or chip. OBD does not give any error code, but I will see if I can read any information about airflow, fuel and so on.
$350 is standard rate here in Norway.. I have to pay $300 for one tank of gas. I will soon convert over to lpg, then I pay around $50 for one tank. Many thanks to the Norwegian government for sucking!
Thanks to all of you.

Please post up what you find was causing the problem.
Also, I feel for your pain with regards to fuel prices brother.
The English government uses fuel as a tax getter.
If you go and switch over to LPG (I have it's great) I use the Dutch made Prinz sequential system with geat results.
What kits do you have in Norway?
Good luck.
Al.
If I am only driving highway my Ram can get 300 miles out of a tank of gas, so the easy math would be $1 a mile. Here in the Philippines gas is a little over $4 a gallon. I drive a motorcycle or Nissan Vanetta (1600cc) both get reasonable mileage.
Good luck....
Looking at the posts, this is certainly an international thread..

Why don't you try disconnecting the battery? Leave it disconnected for about 10 minutes and that would reset the PCM. Maybe it just has a hiccup.

Just ignore that overhead console readout. Fill up and go by your speedometer. if you leave your truck running regularly lately, then that is cause for the mileage drop. if I'm outside warming my truck up for 1/2hr before i get into it, the above guage will read like 8mpg. You really need to calculate your mileage off of your speedo before you pay a mechanic to diagnose a non-existent problem. The overhead console is NOT something to create a solid foundation on for mileage calculations. i know its there, but it's as useful as a narrowband 02 sensor guage...lol
Might I suggest a fuel cleaner.

Yea thats my plan..
I will fill my tank one of the next days ( sick with the flue now) and do a solid calculation. I know i cant trust the console, but the fact that it spiked from 14 to 5.8 that worried me..
Let me fill some gas and i will reply with my result :-)..
Question cwboyjohnny24: If i disconnect my batery for that period of time, wont that disconnect my keys??
Newer done this on a dodge, but know from other car vendors that disconnection of the battery will unpair the keys.
