Default weirdness..... tire sizes

So i was waiting in line at the car wash to wash my truck because i dont have the luxury of having a water house at the apartments... and this ford truck pulled up beside me..... had a nice set of bfg all terrains on his new 17 inch wheels..... his tire size was 285/70/17's the same size as mine and i actually measured the tires and his tire was almost 2 inches higher than mine...... dont under stand, i own a set of discover STT so i guess the different brand? I figured the different brands might be different sizes but not that much different... any info on this would be nice because it will help me for my next selection of tires. Thanks dudes

yep, depends on the tire. My Nittos on the Jeep are supposed to be 32" and measure about 31.8", the Cepeks on my truck are listed as 35x12.5x17s and measure just a hair UNDER 34" at about 33.8". Had I known that, I woulda bought some 37s, cause unless they actually measured over about 36", I'd be able to fit 'em with no problem...

Thanks dude, i am looking into a leveling kit with 305/70/17 with 1-1/4 spacers... i can only find two tires that size, the nitto terra grapplers and the maxxis big horn, i hear great things about the nitto's but i want more of an agressive look.... any advice on a set of tires that size?

295s are actually taller than the 305s but not quite as wide, and they're cheaper than the 285s or 305s if you go with the Nitto.

305, 295, 285 etc are the width, not height. the second # is the % of width that the sidewall is tall.
