Just replaced the coolant in my 04 Ram with the 5.7. Capacity is 18.?? quarts from what I've read. I disconnected the radiator hoses and removed the t-stat and flushed the radiator, heater core and engine block with distilled water. The truck was on an incline when I did it all. After the flush I intended to put in 2 gallons(8 quarts) of antifreeze and the rest water to make 50/50 but I only got 1.5 gallons of antifreeze in before it was full. Ran the truck up to temp to allow t-stat to open and got in a little more but thats it!! Never added any water.

Was there that much water left in the block after the flush?
Maybe because truck was on a hill??

Don't want to have too much antifreeze in and thats all I've added after the flush. Ideas? Thanks

 

did you open the block plug?

 

No, I just kept flushing water through the upper and lower hoses on the engine until it came out clean.

 

Seems to be fine. I just hope I don't have too much antifreeze and not enough water.

 

I would drain the block to and get a correct 50/50 mix. To much water and the life of the coolant is reduced. To little water and the PH of the coolant starts of to high. As coolant ages it the PH starts going up. PH goes up it starts eating at hoses,gaskets and pitting the aluminum block.
