Question Who has put a different rear end than stock in a 1500 3rd gen ??

The Rear End In My truck busted sat. THE Pinion NUT came off and the Pinion Fell back inside the case and you can Imagine the Mess !!

I need a new Rear End and a Drive shaft for my 2002 2wd Quad cab.

Who Here can Help me with A Rear End SWAP ??

By SWAP I mean Putting a different Rear end in the truck than Factory. Something that will hold up and not give any issues. This is the 2nd factory 2002 rear end that has gone out in this truck in 40,000 miles.

The Gear Ratio I have is a 3.55 . I have Disc Rear ( ABS ) and The VSS in the Housing.

Im wondering if I can Put in Anything Else that Will have the Same Bolt pattern on the ends of the Axle tubes to bolt on my Factory Disc Brake setup. or maybe something with disc on it already ?

The Rear Axle in a 1999 - 1500 2wd looks the same but has drums, Can I swap over the Disc's I have to it ? Are the Axles the same ?

Im Really In a Bind And Need this Truck up and Going in a week or so and Refuse to Pay The Going Rate of $900 + for a used 2002 stock rear end again and watch it Mess up. I called 27 Yards In Georgia Monday and the cheapest I found Was $950.00 with Exchange..... and it was a 100,000 + mile rear.

I have even Contemplated Putting in a 2500 Rear end and Buying new wheels ( 5 lug front and 8 lug rear )

I have found a 3.55 rear from a 1999 with VSS in the top for $200 with a 90 day warranty but I have no clue if the brakes will swap...

someone at 4x4 Parts told me to put in a DANA 60 and id Be GTG but could not tell me anything about the rearend or if it would have the VSS sensor or if it would even line up or what i Would have to fab up ?

I build Datsun Racecars for Hobby / Part time Job and I can Fabricate / modify just about anything so Im willing to do what ever except Major Machining .

SOMEONE Help ME With These Questions Please....

my Email to my Blackberry is Miscmechanic@aol.com
My Cell # is 404 - 374 -5498 ( 8 am till 11 pm EST - Georgia )

Any help would be appreciated...

I also have the complete bombed 2002 4.7 V8 from my truck if someone needs parts. just messed up the driver side head and the piston. not the crank , block and every other part on the Motor.

Thanks again for your time..

if you absolutely dont want to use an oem replacement, i would say go with either the dana 60, or the 10.5" rear from a 2500 hemi. both of those are pretty rock solid. only problem with the 10.5 rear is just like you have already stated, its got the 8 lugs. sorry i cant really help more than that.

Does the OEM 2500 (10.5) rear end have the VSS mounting? If so I would say that would be the way to go. Maybe mount 2500 front hubs to match the wheels up. Or redrill the rear to 5 bolt. Sounds like an interesting project.

well, I researched my 2002 - 9.25 rear. It is the same as the 1996 - 9.25 i had almost 1/2 a million miles on. Why in the h@ll did the older ones last forever and the newer ones Timebomb ??

Also.... like I said the 2002-2003-2004 9.25 rears are over $1000.00 I can get a 99' for $150.00 and the Axles are the same, just pull the 4 bolts and remove The drum brakes and bolt on the Disc set up and put the Axles back in.
( BOOM ) you have the same rear end for 1/8 the the Money ??

I would rather Go with the Bigger Dana 60 Rear if I can to Handle the New Motor Im putting in this Summer thats Hanging in my Garage Right now.

I know by using Advance auto's parts finder that the 2003 Ram 2500 2wd has a dana 60 rear and disc Brakes and a VSS sensor ( the same Part # as the one in my 2002 - 1500 2wd) so that would work. Im assuming the width's are the same ?

Yeah, the Dana out of the SRT is popular and you rarely hear about one of those busting in a stock application. Make sure you get the right one, as the spring perches are different between the 04RC SRT rears and the 05-06QC SRT rears. The SRT RC the springs mount underneath, whereas the SRT QC the springs mont on top like a regular 1500 (04RC SRT is pre-lowered fom the factory).
