Newbie with a diff issue
Hey folks, My first post. I have read alot of them but this is my first. I have a question I hope somone can help me with. I am putting in new rear axles and all new rear brake assemblies today in hopes of solving a vibration problem I have had for way too long. When I cracked the rear diff cover I found a small peace of a clip in the bottom, and come to find out is a clutch plate clip, so now this job just got longer. I went to the dealer and got a set of the clips, but I can't get the yolk out for nothin. Any help getting the yolk out and these clips on would be great. Thanks
Welcome to DF.
Most guys don't re-install the clips, although problems can arise possibly later on and I wouldnt reccomend it.
I'm not sure in the complete process as i have never done a Chrysler rear end only Fords and cheby's, but I don't believe it's a 20min tak even after the carrier is completely taken out.
There is a pin(rod) in the middle of the spider gears that needs to be reomved so you can remove the actual C-clips that hold the axles in place. Then you can unbolt the housing caps. make sure you mark the caps because they must go back on exactly as removed since they are machined side specific. Keep an eye on top.bottom as well.
The clips that fell out are what holds the clutch plates together from what I've gathered. Leaving the clips out causes a little bit of movement in there.
if your going through all that, i would have new u-joints pressed in your driveshaft and make sure it's balanced.

Thanks DD. I have everything out except the carriage itself. I pulled axles and the carriage bolts but i can't get the gear assembly out. That is where i am stuck. You say some people leave the clips off? This may be whats causing my vibration?
Man I love those simple solutions....
I have been on here reading post on these clips for a couple hours now and it looks like most everyone just pulls em. I have 130000 miles on this truck and I still love it. Had to to have all new valve springs done last year after the dreaded 03 spring curse got me at 110000, latter than most, and now I get the diff clip issue to boot. Mine have lasted alot longer than most guys, but still why do we have to deal with these issues that are all so common to Ram owners. Looks like I got lucky though three clips still in place and the one thats busted is in two clean pieces and I found both.
