Default doesn't want to move in drive for first startup, then ok...bad trans or???

I've been noticing this lately....more and more often. After it's been sitting for a while, I'll start it up (03 hemi ram quad cab) put it in drive, and it won't creep forward under it's full power. It'll also do this in reverse. Just sit there and not move in idle. Then, if I step on it, it's extremely sluggish moving forward (or backward)...but for the first time only. (not sluggish because of the engine...the engine is purring, but it seems to be slipping sort of...I give it high rpms, but it just doesn't move corresponding to the amount of throttle I'm giving it. By the time I let off the gas and re-apply it, it's better again.

Any ideas?? No engine codes have been set

Have you checked the transmission fluid?

It's normal. The TQ drains itself as it sits for a little while. The owners manual explains this all. They tell you to just put the truck in gear and let it sit for a few seconds as the TQ refills.

I would see if you need to replace the tranny filters. They could be slightly clogged and fluid wont move through until it heats up a little and becomes less dense. I have an 04 Hemi and never have had that happen.

Yeah, my first thought would be the fluid level and filters also. IDK what else.

could also be your filters not seated properly. i would say drop the pan, replace the fluid and filters, and see if it helps.

Taken from here:http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/manuals/index.html
Page 304 of Owners Manual:
NOTE: If the vehicle has not been driven in several
days, the first few seconds of operation after shifting the
transmission into gear may seem sluggish. This is due to
the fluid partially draining from the torque converter into
the transmission. This condition is normal and will not
cause damage to the transmission. The torque converter
will refill within five seconds of shifting from Park into
any other gear position.
It is for an 2006 but I'm sure they're all the same.

My 03 did the same thing. It's the return cannister filter causing the problem. I have changed out my filters 2 times now. Once using Mopar filters and presently using Wix filter kit from Rock Auto. Problem solved.
Good Luck.
