this has been a very Informative thread. got me thinking I needed to open mine up to see if these clips were intact or not. well the were all there and was very clean, no flakes of metal. just spent the last 3 hrs prying, pulling, beating and cussing up a storm.
could move the clips a small amount but that was it. so I left them in for now.
For those of you who had better luck than me, how in the hell did you do it ? LOL
btw truck has about 60,000 miles

Hi guys,
When I pulled the broken clips out of my differential I removed the bearing caps to do it (be very careful not to take the differential out of adjustment or misalign the caps during reinstallation. The cleaning part of the job sucked! I pulled both shafts out and swabbed out the tubes with giant QTIPs I made out of curtain rods and rags After that I ran a couple of gallons of Varsol through the differential tubes using a 3' long parts washer/syphon sprayer to clean it out. The oil/metal mixture was like cement and completely packed against the shaft tubes so it took forever to soften it up. I had to silicone the magnet back to the diff because the solvent ate the original glue.

I was able to clean the diff so well I didn't have to do a second flushing afterwards. Now I stick my finger in the diff when I change the engine oil to make sure no more clips have broken.

If you think your differential looks bad on high mileage Dodges you should see the spark plugs!

Steve

2 weeks ago, my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 74,000 miles retainer clips failed and I had had to replace the whole posi unit and the ring and pinion. Today I brought my 2002 dodge Durango with 95,000 miles for a rear diff. fluid change and found out I need to replace the posi unit. I am pissed. Dodge should recognize this problem and address it. I have contacted Dodge and The National Highway Traffic Safety Assoc. about this on going problem.

Several years back when this was a really big problem for the 02-06 Rams, a lot of us got together and sent reports into the NTHSA in response to a thread calling for action.
I filed a report myself & received a reply, even though I live in the UK.
It amounted to "there wasn't enough numbers coming through for it to be a problem".
Sorry, but I and many others burned by this crappy stock LSD thought otherwise!
It cost me a small fortune over here in the UK in time and money to sort my diff out.
A DTT and the junking of the stock LSD was the way forward for me.
Never mind the terrible risks, of the diff locking at highway speeds with our families in the vehicle.
How people havent been killed by this design failure, is beyond me and pure luck!

Maybe we should start another thread and resurect this and get as many people as we can to re-aproach the NTHSA, and file complaints about the dreaded C clip problem?
Surely there's enough of us now, unfortunately in the same boat as ourselves 70sixpkrt, for it to really matter and be of concern?
You have also demonstrated that it crosses the vehicle type barrier, in that your Durango is goosed!
Al.

Update: I received a call from Dodge Headquarters and they understand my problem. I gave them both case #s. I don't want to get into the details just yet but if your are a LOYAL Dodge customer please call Dodge and make a complaint if you are having Retainer Clip issues with the 9.25 rear ends. It never hurts to contact them directly. By all the complaints hopefully it will lead to a TSB.

no mention here of 4X4 vs. 2WD. Changing of gear ratio?
I guess I'm confused between differential, and the 4:56, 3.55 etc....

It pertains to anyone who has a stock Dodge anti-spin LSD or whatever they wish to call that POS limited slip diff. Either in a 2wd or a 4x4.
All 1500 9 1/2 rear ends with the lsd from about 2002-2006 and I believe a little beyond those years, really need to worry about the ticking time bomb they have back there IMHO.

Is there a gasket to replace, when one takes the cover off, or just RTV?
I just had my Diff gear oil changed, at a Valvoline station a few months or so ago. No mention of problems from the mechanic. But I wouldn't trust them guys too much.
If I go with a new Detroit Tru Track, is that where one changes the gear ratio as well? in other words if I get a DTT with a 4:56, then I'll have to change the front gears as well? (stock 3.55 rear)
