Default Play in CV Joint

Hey guys I've noticed a pretty bad rattle/knock in my front end lately. It seems like I can only hear the noise over 40 MPH for whatever reason. I got under to check it out and found what seems like significant play in the CV joints and I'm wondering if this is normal. The passenger side is the worst, I can actually move the coupling in and out on the axle shaft. I put both couplings back tight against the axle and took 'er for a drive. It seems like the noise is better but definitely still there. Can you guys tell me if this is normal or should I be looking for something else?
Thanks!

Great idea on the video!!! There is a circlip on the stub shaft that locks the cv axle in place. You need a pry bar or large screw driver to pry the shaft loose. If you did not pry the shaft off. I'd say that might be your problem. Also on the video a very brief look at the stub shaft. It looks very shiney. It's possible the splines are worn off as well?

I didnt use a prybar to move the CV but I could easily move it far enough off the stubshaft to see the clip and yes there are some worn splines. I'm still concerned that this isn't my only problem because I checked the joints after a test drive (noise still present) the CVs were in their correct position.
Thanks!

If your up to it. You could remove both cv axles. Then go out and test drive. That should tell you if there are other problems. If your stub shaft splines are worn. Your looking at new stub shafts and new axles.

That play is not normal, u shouldn't be able to move the axle like that so easily. the axle shaft has to be replaced and i would look at both axles to see the splines where they mate to the axle shaft to see if there worn too. Had a job like this, i was lucky and used vise grips to grab onto the axle shaft and was able to hammer the shaft right out. its only held in by a surclip but sometimes u will need a axle shaft puller to remove it and dont forget to change the seals if u do replace the axle shaft. I'd do that before looking for the noise again.
