Maybe the paint on the body is just faded compared to the paint that has been hidden under the emblems for however many years?

that sucks...I used goo gone and a pencil eraser on HOT METAL to get it off, use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat it up

The eraser wheel makes it a ton easier, and the 3m adhesive remover is good if you dont have one

same thing i did (bug n tar remover), however i dont think i really "rubed like hell" some of them look good, like no rub marks at all.. ie my tail gate however it showed up on my slt badges. regardless im pretty happy. its and 02 and i just took them off 3 weeks ago. so eight years and the paint hasnt faded enough for them to show up. I dont really mind t much, but i do wonder how much another clear coat would run for me. maby a good buff with a wheel when it warms up will help.

well that is because you don't get any sun in Alaska to fade the paint.
